Your guide to finding hidden gems in Door County

Ephraim Shores Resort Ephraim lodgingEphraim lodging provides a central location for summer fun

Door County regulars, like many of our guests, have their favorite places that they stick to when staying in Ephraim lodging. While at Ephraim Shores Resort, walking (or driving) to the Ephraim Public Beach followed by an ice cream cone from Wilson’s, and ending the day watching the sunset on our pier is a must. Traditions like these are some of our favorites.

Door County is a historical and scenic, yet trendy, vacation spot. Though full of traditions and popular attractions, there are many hidden gems waiting to be seen on your next weekend getaway in Door County. The following are just a few, as Door County is FULL of them.

Less familiar treasures to seek out when staying in Ephraim lodging

Pillars at the entrance of Hotz Trail – Try out Hotz Trail at Newport State Park. Hotz Trail is a seven mile stretch offering lake front on Europe Lake and views only available in Door County. The pillars at the entrance of the trail are what used to be the entrance to Ferdinand Hotz cottage. Ferdinand Hotz, a German immigrant and Chicago jeweler, became Door County’s largest landowner in the early 1900s, including owning this cottage on Europe Lake. When you walk the Hotz Trail, you are on historic Door County soil!

Porte des Morts Town Park metal staircase – Another lesser-known, breathtaking location in Door County is the view from the bluffs of Porte des Morts Town Park, overlooking Death’s Door. Prior to 2018, there was no (safe) way to get to the waterfront. However, a metal staircase leading to the beautiful shore line was recently built. This hidden gem is a new addition to ease public access and makes for a fun day with the family.

Anderson Store Museum – Everyone knows to visit the colorful and iconic Anderson Dock to take pictures. But have you gone into the Anderson Store Museum? It is like taking a walk back in time. There you will hear personal stories about the historic Anderson family and find out their connection to English royalty.

Washington Island – If you haven’t been to Washington Island, that is at least a day trip you need to take. Leave early in the morning and take in the sun sparkling on the lake while on the ferry ride over Death’s Door. Favorite stops on the island are breakfast at Red Cup Coffee House, grab takeout lunch or delicious bakery items at Island Cafe and Bread Company, a visit to the Jacobsen Museum, or take in the view (and scent) of Fragrant Isle Lavender Farm & Shop.

Edible hidden gems – Check out the new wine bar in Ephraim, Pearl Wine Cottage. An old cottage turned into a trendy new hotspot is perfect for date night, a girls night, or just to grab a drink. Located within walking distance of Ephraim Shores, the location is perfect when you have Ephraim lodging.

If you’re looking to spend your Friday night Wisconsin style, look no further. Every Friday Peninsula Pub has a fish fry, and we recommend the perch plate.

Also new to Ephraim is Prince of Pierogi, serving Polish comfort food. Be the first of your friends to try this new delicacy of pierogis and other Polish specialties. It’s close to Ephraim Shores, why not!
