Breaking down the Door County Half Marathon

History

The idea for the event started back in 2007 over breakfast at the well-known, Al Johnson’s Restaurant in Sister Bay. The idea then turned into action and by 2008, the first Door County Half Marathon was launched.

It was initially created to heighten Door County’s reputation for being an active destination, as well as boost business during the off season. Now, the event is a staple in Door County with more than 2500 runners participating each year.

The Course

When you participate in the Door County Half Marathon you get the privilege to run on some of the most gorgeous trails in the state (and we would argue the country), at Peninsula State Park. This USATF-certified road course starts and ends near Nicolet Bay Beach, one of the most familiar Ephraim beaches, with highlights including the shores of Green Bay, past the Eagle Bluff Lighthouse, and atop bluffs with breathtaking views. The Nicolet Bay 5K includes many of these same highlights.

Peninsula State Park is conveniently about a mile away from Ephraim Shores, where you can book your Door County Half Marathon rooms. And as a designated lodging sponsor, shuttles will pick up and drop off runners staying at Ephraim Shores.

How to Prepare

It is recommended to train for 12 weeks prior to a half marathon, depending on how fit you are, and include some hill training. The terrain for this event, though beautiful, is very hilly and could potentially be strenuous if you have not properly trained. But we love those that are up for the challenge.

Building in some time for rest is essential for every athlete too. Relax in a room with a private whirlpool tub or watch the sunset from a balcony view at Ephraim Shores before your big day running or cheering on your friends and family. We have you covered.
