Safety Highlights Food Industry and Stainless Steel Fabrication

Safety Incentive Program Enhances Robinson Metal’s Employee Participation

A safe work environment is a requirement for the efficient production of food industry and stainless steel fabrication projects. Robinson Metal, Inc. has taken steps to enhance its focus on workplace safety by encouraging a culture of participation within its workforce.

Robinson Metal, Inc., a leader in food industry and stainless steel fabrication, implemented an expanded safety program in 2017 entitled See It, Fix It, Prevent It, which provides an avenue for workers to become more active in the safety process. The safety incentive program is designed to build off of the company’s two-year run without a lost-time accident. This includes its Robinson Pipe & Vessel division, which specializes in ASME pressure vessel manufacturing.

“Prior to introducing this program, there really wasn’t an avenue for employees to document their safety suggestions or talk to their co-workers about unsafe acts,” explains Ryan Kryzanek, Robinson Metal’s full-time on-site safety coordinator. “This has opened lines of communication between employees and encourages them to work proactively toward maintaining a safe work environment.”

Food Industry and Stainless Steel Fabrication Requires a Focus on Safety

Corrosion resistance and ease of cleaning makes food industry and stainless steel fabrication a specialized service. Robinson Fab & Machine, a division of Robinson Metal, Inc., supplies a wide range of stainless steel fabrication products for customers in the dairy, produce, meat, pharmaceutical and packaging industries.

“Workplace safety is a major consideration for our customers, especially when it comes to the vetting process of their suppliers,” Kryzanek says. “Our safety committee has been in place for many years, and we have representatives from all four Robinson Metal divisions and departments.”

Robinson Metal’s See It, Fix It, Prevent It program has been successful in its goal of encouraging more worker participation. The safety committee receives an average of about 20 contacts or suggestions per month, with workers who make suggestions entered into monthly drawings for gift cards and other rewards.

“Since we already had a good safety record, the suggestions have tended more toward adjustments rather than full-scale changes,” Kryzanek says. “However, we have consistently received good, quality suggestions each month from multiple employees in different areas of our facility.”
