Our opportunity: Provide an American-made coin for Veterans Day

Medalcraft Mint American National InsuranceAmerican National Insurance Company presents the veterans in its organization with a commemorative coin every Veterans Day. Previous versions of the coins had been produced by an overseas supplier and fell short of generating the desired impact.

Bruce LePard, senior vice president of human resources and employee communications for the Galveston, Texas, company, wanted something better for 2021. He also wanted an American company to fulfill the order if possible. An online search led him and his assistant, Debbie Koerner, to Medalcraft Mint.

“This year was extremely important to us because it was the 100th anniversary of the creation of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery,” Bruce explains. “We wanted to do something special for that, and it’s nice to be able to say these coins were produced in the United States.”

Debbie coordinated the design efforts of the American National team with those of Medalcraft Mint through sales representative Sami LaCourt. Time was of the essence as Veterans Day was less than a month away. The coins shipped October 25, in plenty of time for the November 11 federal holiday.

“The customer service was great,” Debbie says. “Sami answered every question and she was a pleasure to work with.”

The result was a handsome two-sided, 2-inch brass coin with an antique finish. It features relief imagery of the American Flag next to the American National building on one side, and the Tomb of the Unknown and a guard on the back to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the memorial in Arlington, Virginia.

“The coins arrived and we were amazed at how great they looked,” Bruce says. “Our previous coins had a plastic appearance to them, but these look different and we’re really happy with them. We’ve had lots of compliments, and we’ll certainly be using Medalcraft Mint again.”
