DOT physicals can result in certificates valid for up to 24 months

WI Drug Testing DOT physicalsWisconsin Drug Testing Consortium is a C-TPA for DOT physicals

DOT physicals are a requirement for holding a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL), and companies regulated by the Department of Transportation rely on third party administrators such as Wisconsin Drug Testing Consortium (WDTC) for meeting DOT needs.

Employees designated by the DOT as safety sensitive, meaning their job duties can impact their own safety and that of the public, are required to have regular DOT physicals to remain in compliance. WDTC, an accredited, Certified Third Party Administrator (C-TPA), provides physicals as a one-stop shop in northeastern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan for services including consortium, drug testing, DOT mock audit training and criminal background checks.

DOT physicals must be conducted by a licensed medical examiner listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) registry. Physicals are valid for up to 24 months, but the medical examiner may issue a certificate for less than 24 months when the driver has a condition such as high blood pressure that warrants more frequent monitoring. WDTC offers same-day quotes for DOT physicals.

What to expect at DOT physicals

Physicals cover a variety of areas ranging from a general physical examination, vision, hearing and urinalysis. Drivers should bring along a complete list of their medications, including doses and their doctor’s information.

Individuals with certain medical issues need to bring documentation with them to the exam such as:

  • Drivers with diabetes should bring their most recent lab results from Hemoglobin A1C and blood sugar logs.
  • Drivers with heart-related issues should bring a letter from their cardiologist that describes their medical history and current medications.
  • Drivers with hearing or vision problems should bring their hearing aids, eyeglasses or contacts.

A certified medical examiner must make a determination that a disqualified driver is medically qualified to operate a commercial motor vehicle in interstate commerce.
