Die-striking 3-dimensional medals worthy of award-winning artwork

Medalcraft Mint is justifiably proud of its in-house design team, but occasionally we have the honor of producing 3-dimensional medals designed by external award-winning artists. This was the case with our production of the stunning Brookgreen Gardens Medal by artist Heidi Wastweet, which earned the American Medal of the Year (AMY) award from the American Medallic Sculpture Association (AMSA).

Medalcraft Mint is proud to have been the mint selected to produce Heidi’s masterpiece, a 3-by-3 inch square medal featuring Brookgreen Gardens’ iconic Black Crowned Night Heron. Brookgreen Gardens is a popular attraction in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and was named one of the Top 10 Gardens in the U.S. by TripAdvisor.

Just over 1,000 3-dimensional medals were die-struck and given to Brookgreen Gardens members subscribing at the Presidents Council level or higher. Heidi told the AMSA, “The two sides of the medal show two sides of the bird’s character: the serious, gruff side and a playful, goofy side. The composition of the design is intended to not only be pleasing individually on each side, but also displayed side by side joined to make a single, fluid design so the birds face each other in a yin-yang fashion.”
